What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu originated in Brazil in the early 1900s when the Gracie family karate adapted traditional Japanese Judo and Jujutsu into a ground-fighting system designed for smaller practitioners to control and submit larger opponents. BJJ proved its effectiveness on the global stage through early UFC events, where Royce Gracie defeated much larger opponents using technique rather than brute force. Today, BJJ is practiced worldwide as both a martial art and a competitive sport with a structured belt ranking system. Training revolves around takedowns, guard work, sweeps, positional control, joint locks, and chokes. The art rewards patience, timing, and problem-solving, which is why many people describe it as physical chess. At Elite Martial Arts, we teach BJJ in a way that is accessible to everyone regardless of age, size, or athletic background. Ready to experience the art for yourself? Gi vs No-Gi Jiu Jitsu
At Elite Martial Arts, we offer both Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu training. Gi training uses the traditional kimono, which allows for collar chokes, lapel guards, and sleeve grips that add layers of technical depth to your game. No-Gi training strips those grips away and emphasizes speed, wrestling-based control, and submission techniques that translate directly to self-defense and MMA. Many of our students train both styles because each one strengthens different aspects of your grappling. Our coaches help you decide which format to start with based on your goals, and you are always welcome to try both.
